Edition of 50
My dad, like a lot of old time cowboys, wouldn’t ride a mare. The big outfits don't keep the mares around the geldings because of the “ruckus” that usually occurs when the sexes are mixed. Lucky mares spend their days just raising a big ole colt. However, some men have had a special mare that, because of her disposition and abilities, was broke and grew to be a favored partner in the pasture. Some of these mares were so valued that they were used even while they raised a colt. Many times the colt follows along and starts “cow horse training 101” at an early age. Dinner is served whenever the opportunity avails itself- it’s always “fast food” when mom is on the job.
